The Right to Hoist the Flag

Before 1974, only Governors (appointed by Delhi) hoisted the National Flag on Independence Day. Kalaignar famously fought the Union Government to secure the right for all elected Chief Ministers in India to hoist the flag in their own states.

Rajamannar Committee

He appointed the first-ever state-level committee in Indian history to formally study Center-State relations. It fundamentally challenged the over-centralization of power in New Delhi, setting the intellectual framework for Indian federalism.

"Kalaignar" — The Artist

Before he was a Chief Minister, he was the sharpest pen in the Dravidian movement. His script for Parasakthi (1952) radically reshaped Tamil cinema, turning entertainment into a vehicle for rationalism and social reform. He penned commentaries for the ancient Thirukkural, authored the epic Romapuri Pandian, and constructed the monumental Valluvar Kottam. He wielded language not just as art, but as an absolute political weapon.

Words That Changed Tamil Nadu

Parasakthi, 1952 — Cinema Script

"The gods you worship were made by human hands. The justice you seek must come from human will."

This dialogue, spoken on cinema screens across Tamil Nadu, ignited the rationalist movement and made Karunanidhi a household name at age 28.

செம்மொழி போர் — 2004

"தமிழுக்கு செம்மொழி தகுதி வேண்டும் — இது என் கோரிக்கை அல்ல, இது தமிழ் மக்களின் உரிமை!"

His relentless campaign secured Tamil as India's first Classical Language in 2004, a recognition 2,000 years in the making.

Women's Rights Address — 1989

"A society that denies a woman her ancestral property has not earned the right to call itself civilised."

This preceded the Hindu Succession Act amendment that finally gave Tamil Nadu women equal inheritance rights — the first state in India.

Against Hindi Imposition — 1965

"You can impose a language on a map. You cannot impose it on a people who have guarded their tongue for three millennia."

Spoken during the anti-Hindi agitation that ultimately led to the Official Languages Act protecting state languages across India.
